On Behalf of | Jul 10, 2024 | Firm News

Toxic PFAS- “forever chemicals” (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)- have made headlines recently for being ubiquitous, persistent, and toxic. Evidence suggests associations between exposure to PFAS and health effects such as:

  • Lowered male fertility
  • Lowered women’s chance of pregnancy
  • Increased risk of kidney and testicular cancers
  • Increased risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children
  • Endocrine system disruption
  • Thyroid function disruption
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Increased cholesterol levels
  • Affected growth, learning, and behavior of infants and older children
  • Reduced immunity
  • Reduced vaccination response

PFAS found in 81% of plastic sandwich bags

A recent consumer study of 11 popular types of plastic sandwich bags found PFAS in 9 of the 11 products tested. Mamavation sent samples of plastic bags to an EPA-certified laboratory looking for indications of toxic “forever chemicals.” The vast majority—81%—of the total sandwich bags tested had indications of PFAS.

Among the brands Mamavation found contained the chemicals are Boulder, Complete Home, Great Value, If You Care, Lunchskins, Meijer, Target and Walgreens. The only brand that did not show any markers of PFAS was Ziploc. Public health advocates say the best way consumers can protect themselves is to use glass containers instead of plastic.
