What is forced labor?

On Behalf of | Mar 11, 2025 | Human Rights

Most people who live in the United States (U.S.) appreciate their ability to work the job of their choice without being forced to work for a specific employer. Unfortunately, there are still individuals who are subjected to forced labor.

Forced labor occurs when an individual is compelled to work because of threats, deception, coercion or other forms of force. This is common in industries, such as manufacturing, agriculture and domestic work.

Laws forbid forced labor

Companies that operate in the U.S. must ensure that their own supply chains don’t use forced labor. They can face penalties if they’re found to engage in or benefit from forced labor. While some people may associate forced labor with only workers in other countries, this is a domestic problem, too.

There are several factors that might place an individual at a higher risk of being placed into forced labor. These include:

  • Having language barriers or immigration issues
  • Needing basic necessities for living
  • Being isolated from family and friends
  • Having disabilities or past traumas

It can often be difficult for these individuals to reach out for help because they’re so isolated and closely monitored. The issue with this is that their safety and well-being are at risk if they remain in their current situation.

Anyone who’s been subjected to forced labor should learn about their legal options to combat this atrocious situation.
